I couldn't make today's meeting, but for past meetings Jitsi has
worked well for me once I used Chromium instead of Firefox.
I like that jitsi lets me set lower video quality (I have a
slow DSL connection) and that I can use the spacebar for
push-to-talk; Zoom on Linux has neither of those features.
(Even aside from preferring open source options, of course.)

I think echo happens when a participant uses a mic that's not very
directional, so the mic picks up the sound from the computer's
speakers and sends it back, slightly delayed. I've seen echo
problems just as often in Zoom meetings as in Jitsi.

For anyone who has one of these echo-y mics and is looking for a
better option, I bought a Samson Go mic based on advice from
Elicia White's excellent Embedded podcast,
https://embedded.fm/blog/2018/6/19/an-intro-to-podcasting
and I like it (she also mentions fancier, more expensive options).
Before that, I used a cheap corded earbud+mic set made for phones: I
have one that came with my Samsung phone, another that came with my
husband's iPhone, and they both work well for meetings like Zoom and
Jitsi and don't seem to have an echo problem.
