Why are you trying to avoid pinging? ICMP Echo ('ping') is an extremely
useful network diagnostic tool.

Think long and hard before screwing around with firewalling rules, and
_especially_ don't do so based on advice from some idiot Web site
like 'ShieldsUp' without understanding what the hell you're doing and
why. If you do, e.g., going around blocking off where there's no
vulnerability and no reason for blocking, you're likely to accomplish
little except DoSing yourself.

And this is desirable _why_? I'd say you're well on your way to
dysfunctional networking, i.e., DoSing yourself.
It really is in your interest to cease just copying things other people
write about on the Internet without understanding not just what you are
doing but _why_ you should do that at all.
