I should correct one bit of wording (in relation to HPLIP/HPIJs's
'open core' nature and how often secret-sauce proprietary 'plugins' 
available separately from HP are required):

I should not have said 'most', lacking a detailed knowledge of which HP 
printing devices require proprietary binary-only plugins for reasonable
operation.  _Many_ do.  Any individual printer should be checked against
its Openprinting.org page (assuming one yet exists) for details,
including -- as John Lau mentioned (thanks!) -- alternative options that
might work well enough without requiring HP's plugin.
