Hi LUGers,
SF-LUG meets every third Monday from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M.
and every first Sunday from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M.
at the Cafe Enchante, 26th and Geary Boulevard.
These meetings are usually lightly attended with a high for the
year so far of 7 members. If you have a problem come along
and maybe we can help but if not we can usually find someone
who can.
Linux Pro magazine - not out yet, will keep looking
New distributions:
4MLinux-22.0 as compact as ever.
pclinuxos64-MATE-2017.07.iso very nice looking and functional Desktop
Environment.
pclinuxos64-kde5-2017.07.iso nice looking but latest of Plasma 4.14.18
is still much better.
Linux Mint 18.2 in KDE, Mate
In addition though I won't collect a copy for you, TAILS 3.0 is out.
If it is on schedule might have a Fedora release before the meeting.
I reinstalled the DebianEdu/SholeLinux version 9 and managed to add myself
as a user so that I no longer have to boot-up as root. This is a very
complete
release though it is not as easy for me to use as PCLinuxOS64 2016.03.
This is the 5.4 GiB iso file which I have written to a USB Flash Drive.
It has options on the 64 bit disk for 32 bit installation but I have
nothing to try it out on.
The DebianEdu 9 is aimed to be setup as one sort or another of a server
or as a Workstation or simpler client. So this is aimed right at
computer labs
in a school or workshop setting. I chose Roaming Workstation.
I have my problems with the installation procedure and thought I must
have fouled up the install but I had not. The installation program does
not allow for the creation of users but root only. Users can be added via
the root shell command "adduser" then following the prompts. You do
not have to give the command much information but i can see how
being given student users e-mail and phone numbers might be useful
to contact them. I just hit return and still got my user account then
used "Change Users" to get to the new account and configure the KDE
desktop..
Well I hope to see some of us next Monday at the Cafe Enchante.
If I have mentioned any distribution that you would like to see at
the next meeting please contact me asap.
