LXDE as people know it is going away, however.

The developers found that the gtk3 graphics toolkit has excessive
disadvantages going forward, and therefore made the decision to bail and
recode for the Qt graphics toolkit (used by KDE), joining forces with
the Razor-qt DE project. Their new DE based on Qt, the successor to
both LXDE and Razor-qt, is called 'LXQt', and is still rather beta-ey
at this date.

gtk3 is heading towards becoming a GNOME3 monopoly, although the XFCE4
DE people claim to be making slow progress towards full support.
(If there's a quick transition to Wayland, that'll be a whole new game,
though.)
