[sf-lug] SF-LUG meeting notes for Sunday, February 5, 2017

Hi LUGers,

     Well Tom was at the Cafe as I entered about 10:40 AM.
He seemed to be having minor problems with one or more of
his installs.  He took away the Linux Pro magazine with the
story about Diaspora, the open source social media application
and a couple of disks.  This issue with the Diaspora story is
still on the stand at the Fog City News. As far as I understand
Diaspora provides a distributed way to run social media
with the user in charge of the user's account.

     I set up my Dell and got a drink then got online, planning
to do a few updates, but when I tried to start Synaptic. my
package manager, it did not open.  From a root terminal
I tried to start up Synaptic and Main Computer Control but
ended up with the cursor version of MCC as GTK or GT could not
  provide an  interface to Synaptic nor to MCC.  I made sure
  I had a User bliss entry then changed some of the permissions
for services.
     I rebooted eventually into the older kernel 4.9.6 and
was able to startup both Synaptic and MCC.  I did my updates
and re-installed the MCC interface and the GTK, then on reboot
to Linux kernel 4.9.7 found my problems had gone away.
     I had attempted to use a bootable flash drive but it
was broken.  So I went back to the now working PCLOS,
formatted the Flash drive and using DDcopy got a booting
Flash drive.
     Maestro stopped by.  He was there for most of the meeting.
    11:05 AM Ken Schaffer and his wife, Assunta came in.  He
worked with Tom and with Maestro but the Schaffer's left early
at about 11:55.

     12:40 PM Jim Stockford came by.
     12:45 started packing my luggage which took a lot of time.
     About 1:00 PM we left and Jim gave Tom and myself
a ride.  They dropped me at my home.

     The next meeting will be on Monday February 20, 2017
and you can expect to see my usual notice about February 13.

     Please submit corrections and emendations ASAP so that
incorrect ideas do not have time to become fixed in people's minds.
