I see on
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Upgrading-RAM-and-SSD-on-the-X1-Carbon-4th-generation/m-p/3525364
that you have already gotten a pretty definitive response from a forum
moderator, who referred you to the specs that very clearly says
'soldered to systemboard, no sockets'. This also matches what I read
elsewhere. Conclusion: Sales support person was mistaken.
The Thinkwiki page also says 'soldered directly on the mainboard', and
that wiki's always been pretty good.

(Old joke courtesy of Steve Wozniak: What's the difference between a
used car salesman and a computer salesman? The used car salesman knows
when he's lying.)
But, you know, if you call back the sales support people and they swear
there really is a customizable option, maybe you should try to order
that. If what they ship you turns out to match what the forum moderator
and spec sheet say (no RAM sockets), then send it back and get a refund.
Or just order a unit already maxed out with 16GB RAM. Then, you'll be
set.
