I suppose you might be unclear on what sense #1 and sense #2 
of a word mean in a dictionary.

In this case, Merriam-Webster had the sad duty of adding the way you
used it as sense #2 because so many people get it wrong on a daily basis
that it becomes their duty to record that fact -- as they don't tell
people what they _should_ say, just what they do say.
