I might point out, this is what Leafnode is for.  Leafnode is a package
that runs a local private netnews server, which you let fetch and cache
newsgroups from your provider as you become interested in each group.
This way, you are generally reading and responding at local speeds.  In
the background, Leafnode is propagating outbound postings and fetching
batches of other sites' articles -- exactly as if you had a local 'real'
news server, but without the hassle.

   If the masses were into Usenet I bet we would have 3 times
