     Surprised I haven't seen a note about it here yet but the story is at:

         Ubuntu CDs will make use of a loader image signed by 
Microsoft's /'WinQual/' key. This will allow Ubuntu to boot on /'more or 
less every off-the-shelf [Windows 8] system'.

         More discussion in the story at the site listed above.  Lots of 
comments
demonstrating that many views of the matter are still held.
