I don't, so deferring to someone that does. In lieu of that, I offer ...

I hear that you are frustrated, wanting more ease around getting
printing going.
I can get that and want to separate that from "Hewlett Packard refuses
to support Linux" which is untrue in many ways (disclosure, I used to
work in one of the printing divisions).

Here's the company sponsored page about printing in LInux:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html

 From the get help page
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/support.html
"HP does not provide telephone support for Linux printing. All support
is provided online at the following web page: https://launchpad.net/hplip
then click the "Ask a question" section."

Here's a sept 2008 page which says the p1006 is _supported_ with
caveat: "Known Issues 1. User initiated printer status in the hp-
toolbox is not available during the print job".
http://hplipopensource.com/node/10

That was for 2.8.2. Current release is 3.10.2

On a 9.10 ubuntu system, I see a 'apt-cache search hplip' return a
list of things things. While I don't have that printer or experience
with it, I would try to install a few of the systems and see if that
gets things going.
Good luck.
