[sf-lug] system beep

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) with Gnome.  Under System/Preferences/Sound
there are two volume sliders, one just for alerts, the other for output.
Then you have the system volume slider on the task bar.  Also make sure you
have selected the Ubuntu sounds, and not the "no sound" option.  Pick the
alert of your choice, the default being a kind of "doink".
