Ja, but what fun is that?

I urge the time-honoured "root and branch" method:

Ctrl-Alt-F1.  Login.
$ sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop
$ sudo rm /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager
$ sudo apt-get install wmaker wmaker-data #or icewm, fluxbox, etc.
Ctrl-Alt-F7
Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc

I guarantee zero further gnome-panel troubles, after that.
Also, no more gconf seppuku, etc. ;->
