Here is an example of the kinds of things that we will be able to do with
St. Anthony. Notice the emphasis on Free Open Source Software. St. Anthony
is really "getting" the importance of Free Open Source Software:
Tenderloin Computer Help Day
September 27, 2008
9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
150 Golden Gate Avenue at Jones, St. Anthony Foundation
Network Ministries, St. Anthony Foundation and other Tenderloin agencies
strive to increase technology use by offering computer classes and labs. But
many Tenderloin residents may have old or obsolete computer equipment and
software is often too expensive.
At this event, volunteers will
1. Help clients apply for a free computer, provided by Alameda County
Computer Resource Center (www.ACCRC.org) ACCRC gives free refurbished
computers to schools, non-profit organizations, and economically and/or
physically disadvantaged individuals. The refurbished systems all run a Free
software GNU/Linux operating system.
2. Demonstrate how to use the computers and install free open source
software; and
3. Provide simple technical support for existing computers;
4. Demonstrate how to browse the Internet to find useful information and
resources.
You can select one of the teams or you can help out wherever you are needed.
