What ever system you get, state of the art desktop
now-a-days would be a Athlon 64 bit chip with dual
cores, and I would get 2 GB of RAM to go with it. Also
a hard disk drive of at least 120 GB to 160 GB. 

If you do not want to use Ubuntu, you could try Red
hat, and they have a list of systems that are
certified or at least compatible
(https://hardware.redhat.com/hwcert/index.cgi).
