nothing. i don't think that's what the problem is,
though.
set the machines up dual boot. how big are those
drives? if they're big enough, cut them in three, set
up the third part to as a mirror of the xp partition,
refreshed weekly via script.
now they have a system that can be quickly brought
back in case of spyware or virus intrusion. when xp
goes down, you don't just reinstall xp and start using
the machine 30 minutes later. a machine typically
takes about 2 or 3 days of loading updates and crap
from MS, and usually needs several restarts to do it.
regular drop-ins by LUG folk could ensure that at
least one machine is running ubuntu. and if someone
doesn't like linux, the machine can quickly be
rebooted into xp.
"oh - you don't like linux?..."
[puzzled look - the complainer didn't even _know_ what
linux was 20 seconds ago. this would be a good time
to present the complainer with a free ubuntu disk with
handsome, semi-naked people on it.
" here, this is free, you might want to look at this
at home..."]
"...here, let me just reboot into this other os.
yeah, we set these machines up so that it WOULDNT'
TAKE 48 HOURS FOR A REINSTALL TO COMPLETE LIKE IT USED
TO _WHEN_ VIRUSES TOOK OUT THE XP SYSTEMS, USUALLY
EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS. additionally, as you can see,
a complete suite of websurfing and productivity
software is on this machine. yes, yes, it can be xp
if i really need to work in xp. why do you need to do
that? here, i'm restarting the machine as xp for you.
please let me know when you're done so i can
restart it for the _other customers_. well, yes as a
matter of fact. you'd be surprised how many people
are leaving xp behind for linux..."
