[sf-lug] Provide for fileserver search via web?

Greetings list!

First of all, I apologize if I'm missing some bit of netiquette here --
I did a real cursory(short short short) search of the archives and
didn't see anything... which reminds me, isn't there some way to search
archives(other than "manually" searching through the links/postings)?
Can someone refresh my memory?

But I digress already. Like many of you and other Linux
users/enthusiasts, I've got Samba running on a Linux box or two that
connects to Windows file stores(a rather large one in the case of my
question) and I've just come around to thinking about exposing that
large file store to remote searching. Being somewhat worried about
security, the only access I'd enable is HTTP with some kind of
authentication. Oh ok, perhaps SSL too if I have to... but the last
time I tried to build SSL into Apache and deal with the ins/outs, it was
nasty. Admittedly, that was many years ago and the pre-built packages
these days probably already have SSL included.

So the question is, what are people doing these days to accomplish this
functionality? A remote search into a Windows file store? Something
from CPAN? htDig? Others??

We can chat about it at the next meeting if I haven't made myself clear
here.

G'day!
