Re the dis-alignment of display chunks: I have found that on systems with intel chipsets, this solved it for many users: $ sudo apt remove xserver-xorg-video-intel and reboot. As I understand it the intel driver is buggy and the framebuffer driver is fine. Googling may find you more informed rationales, but it has worked for the systems I support.
