Back when LUGs were primarily installfests, there was also more demand for Linux than expertise. A lot of people wanted to install Linux to learn more skills they could eventually turn into a job, particularly during the dot-com crash.

These days, many of those same people have wandered off to semi-related pursuits including Arduino-related things (e.g., midi controllers), 3d-related things including VR headsets, or open source quadcopter races. All of which sound like fun too.
