Ouch.
In my experience problems with clogged heads and other water related issues are much more common than electrical issues.  It would have also taken me a while to suspect the sensor, which was one of the newer pieces.   Too bad the failure mode saves water instead of saving plants.
I suggest you get some B-1 from your favorite garden supplier and use it generously on the valuable trees.
