That doesn't seem too bad. It's how I operate. For some reason
starting up in X doesn't always work (typically the kdm/gdm/etc
doesn't recognize the password). So I just workaround that, at least
on debian Lenny, and have the system start up in a regular tty (no X)
and start X. When I want to shut down, I do the reverse - exit
(usually KDE) and then shutdown from a console.

That's a separate issue. But it doesn't (or shouldn't) have anything
to do with booting the system with X versus a tty. There's a series of
lines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf that handle dri.
Do you have at least
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
listed there?
If you want, I could send you my file but it may not be of much use -
different video hardware for one (nvidia geforce FX5200) and I don't
know what video you have. 'glxgears' and 'glxinfo' will give you info
on whether dri is enabled on your system.
specifically:
dfox at m206-157:/etc/X11$ glxinfo | grep ^direct
direct rendering: Yes

Yes, of course.

Evidently not, and I have ppc for gutsy here. I don't have a ppc
machine of course :(.
