To be sure.

The squatters' business model relies on most [ex-] domain owners either
paying or abandoning the domain, for lack of time / energy / money to
litigate and/or use ICANN's UDRP process.

In the most recent case, the domain was needed to coordinate a one-time,
long planned, non-profit public event that was about two weeks off when
the domain expired and was gobbled up by a squatter. The event
organisers were rather compelled by circumstance. It is often so.
