Hi all,
Just finsihed downloading the Linux Lite []01] v7.2 64bit ISO for creating
a new Virtualbox v7.0.22 []02] guest machine.
Rejoined today's Jit.si Meet SF-LUG session !12Noon, when was able to
reclaim bandwidth from the download for this session.
Perhaps appropriate to John S's intended Lubuntu install on the "Asus
Chromebook CB3-532-C47C with 2 gb of ram and a 16gb SSD"[04], there is a
recent LinuxConfig article entitled 'Best Small Linux Distros for
2024'[05]
Seems that Lubuntu[06] is the number one pick in the LinuxConfig article
(:->) -- although there is an additional decision whether to download and
install the latest stable release 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) -or- the latest
_LTS_ release 24.04.1 LTS (Noble Numbat); see [07] :-\
In any case, after completing the download of LinuxConfig article's number
three choice[01], am planning to set up the new Linux Lite vbox guest
using a similar 2 GB "physical" RAM and a 16 GB capacity vdi "disk drive".
On that LinuxConfig article's other distro recommendations, IMO, I
wouldn't necessarily recommend the fourth-ranked AntiX[08] or the
sixth-ranked MX Linux[09] :-\
The principal reasons for my negative recommendation of AntiX are 1) it
seems somewhat difficult to install for someone who has minimal experience
with Linux, 2) the various selectable Window Manager (WM) options can be a
bit confusing/offputting, and 3) the numerous layered right-mouseclick
menu options can also be a bit confusing :-(
AntiX's lightweight WM's _do_ enable speedier performance on low-end
hardware, though (again, IMO).
The principal reason for my negative recommendation of MX Linux is that
with XFCE, it is more of "midweight desktop environment" (its site even
states so at [09]) and thus may be slightly less suitable for that
lower-resource "Asus Chromebook CB3-532-C47C with 2 gb of ram and a 16gb
SSD".
---
Anyone still remember that whole SCO vs. Linux controversy as vividly
presented in Pamela Jones' Grokaw two decades ago??
Well, there is a recent FOSS Force article 'Once Linuxs Biggest Enemy:
Darl McBride Dies and Nobody Notices'[10] :-O
---
Apparently, Ron from BCLUG (who is also currently on today's SF-LUG Jit.si
Meet) is giving a React Presentation at GoLUG 11/6/2024; see [11].
Two questions I would have is
- Whether this is suitable for those such as myself with zero JavaScript
experience whatsover?
- Are there a webpage and/or downloadable slides for Ron's presentation?

Finally, here is a forwarded message from Bobbie S.:
