Have the "new" desktop Lenovo from Tom set up with Slackware Linux, Devuan
GNU+Linux and Debian GNU/Linux in a triple multiboot from a single /boot
partition's grub.cfg
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, it turns out...
a) there is another mass rebuild for Slackware 15.0 according to
yesterday's 'Current (pre-release) ChangeLog for x86_64' at [2], this one
with an upgraded 5.10.16-noarch-1 kernel. Quoting [2]:
Mon Feb 15 19:23:44 UTC 2021
Here we go again... upgraded to glibc-2.33 and one last mass rebuild for
Slackware 15.0. The only packages upgraded in this batch are glibc and the
kernels - everything else is just a rebuild against the new glibc.
Not rebuilt in this batch: devs (best to just leave this alone),
glibc-zoneinfo, kernel-firmware, rust, linux-faqs, linux-howtos,
aspell-en, mozilla-firefox, mozilla-thunderbird, and seamonkey.
There's a new Rust compiler but Firefox and Thunderbird will need to be
patched to use it, so we'll hold off on those until they're ready for the
new Rust either with patches or new upstream releases.
Until we have that and a few more scheduled upgrades I'm not quite ready
to call this beta yet, but you can call it 15.0-alpha1. :-)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While Patrick Volkerding's full release of Slackware 15.0 will be "ready
when it's ready :-)" , at the same time, am anticipating that 15.0 may be
released sometime over the next several months -- when the current
*weather* deep-freeze (not Slackware codefreeze) in Pat's Midwest location
will have long passed on (a low of 8 degrees F today, ouch!!)
b) Devuan GNU+Linux came out with a Beowulf 3.1.0 point release [3]. New
in this 3.1.0 point release are a slightly expanded selection of Init
choices in the Devuan installer; "The installer now has three choices for
the init system: sysvinit, openrc or runit".
Have already applied the standard Devuan update and upgrade options on the
Lenovo desktop, so absolutely no further need at this point to download
and re-apply the 3.1.0 point release from iso :-)

WS I'm freely donating:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Has drive-stored isos of amd64 "Buster" CD, latest amd64 arch linux CD,
amd64 FreeBSD. 12.2 DVD, PloP boot CD, Finnix 121 CD for OS replacement if
desired.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
c) According to the FreeBSD 13.0 Release Notes and the FreeBSD 13.0
Release Process pages at [5] and [6], the Second beta test snapshot is
already out now, and the 13.0 RELEASE announcement is anticipated to come
out at the end of March.
Have no plans to replace the current amd64 FreeBSD 12.2 DVD
with 13.0 on the Precision T5400 -- whoever takes the machine
can do this by themselves ;-)
d) The full release of Finnix 122 has come out with a number of fixes, new
packages and new features, including the linux-image-5.10.0-3-amd64
kernel[7].
The list of Finnix 122 packages is at [8] and others can more finely
compare these with similar Slackware 15.0 alpha packages at [2] if
desired.
Have already downloaded and hash-checked this latest Finnix 122
iso and will test out its CD image before copying the 441MB
iso onto the T5400's hard drive.
