The (social far, far more than technical) problem arose a few months
into the pandemic when LUGs started using Jitsi Meet more intensively,
and the usual LUG idiocy immediately arose when member X had a poorly
described technical problem and many observers walked away thinking
'Well, we obviously cannot use this technology, because X had some
problem he/she could not understand and didn't detail;' Sometimes,
member X says the problem was with 'Firefox' -- no version number stated
-- and the problem description was 'it didn't work'. Which of course is
totally impossible to investigate when thus stated.
Member X might have turned out to be running an ancient version of
Firefox with zero WebRTC support, but of course you have to pry that
version information out of him/her before it's possible to make
progress. More credible users have been known to report that specific
_recent_ releases of Firefox work OK except have high CPU load.
Personally, I just go mostly with what the Jitsi Meet developers say,
which is that Chromium-based browsers are best and known-good, and that
others might give satisfactory results or might not.
