Need to take off your Microsoft Windows (or whatever other operating
system hat), and put on your Unix/X11/Linux hat.
So, X, there are customarily three mouse buttons:
mouse button 1
mouse button 2
mouse button 3
And, X, and xterm, general default behavior, to select and copy:
click and drag mouse button 1 and release
And to paste: click mouse button 2. That's it.
Oh, and customarily, mouse buttons 1, 2, and 3, are respectively
left to right, left, middle, and right.
If you only have a two button mouse, by default, you typically only
have buttons 1 and 3 (left and right by default),
and for one button mouse, just mouse button one.
Other buttons not present might be emulated by various means,
depending upon configuration and such,
e.g. "simultaneous" click of 1 and 3 to emulate press of 2,
or press/click of scroll wheel for or to emulate mouse button 2.
Beware, however, some DEs and/or terminal emulations, etc., may
emulate more Microsoft Windows-ish behavior in terms of how some of
the default mouse button operations behave. So, not everything necessarily
follows the X and xterm defaults ... even by default.
