Follow up for those who might be interested:
I found that the following packages had to be installed (some obvious, 
others not so much at least to me:)
xorg
xdm xdm-tools
fluxbox

Also learned that the command 'shutdown' no longer exists, instead:
systemctl poweroff | reboot

copy/paste: in xterm use shift middle click to paste (rather than simple 
middle click or right click.)
