A little back ground as to what motivates my question and interest in 
the subject is as follows.
I've been using Ubuntu (LTS) for probably close to a decade but feel 
that I don't need all that it provides.
Most of my time is spent at the command line
but I do use a browser (for email, searches, etc), occasionally look at 
a photo or a pdf file and rarely fire up libre office when sent a 
document.
The standard Ubuntu desktop seems way more than I need.
Also perhaps of relevance is that I've been using rather old hardware 
(Lenovo X301).
