Some people like telling stories. ;-)
Some even like listening to / reading them.
"Let me tell 'ya 'bout the time I went to New Orleans in
the Summer of '64. ..." (No, I didn't, but ...)

Just sayin'.

And yes, too, there's also (much) usefulness 'n learning that can
be done via [L]UGs and their resources (e.g. list(s), etc.), and
even more so when more optimally used towards learning/teaching/solving
and the like.

Purpose of [L]UGs, and (specific) list(s)? Well, "it depends".
E.g. some have many separate lists, such as one list that's just for
jobs, and all others prohibiting job postings or even discussions
thereof.

And, more specifically SF-LUG, and its one and only list?
http://linuxmafia.com/mailman/listinfo/sf-lug
"General discussion mailing list for the San Francisco group SF-LUG."
"No direct Job Postings"
So, ... sounds to me pretty general ... though it is for SF-LUG.
So, ... seems what's *permissible* is relatively broad/open for that
particular list.
Now, as to what's optimal and/or how it ought best be used, and/or
to what purpose(s), ... I'd guess if we asked two dozen
SF-LUGers, we'd probably get about 24 to 30 or so generally differing
opinions/perspectives, ... not necessarily (but possibly)
any of them "wrong" ... or at least not entirely "wrong".

And, yep, some folks (and quite likely also including myself?),
do tend to post more-or-less similarly - and consistently so -
even if, at least in (significant?) part(s) that could be
(much?) better optimized ... at least for some particular
optimization(s). Some patterns may often tend to quite
continue (humans tend to be relatively set in their ways - for
the most part - and relatively resistant to change) - even with
repeated nudges/urgings - or whatever - from others (sometimes even
many others).

Anyway, just my $0.02 USD worth or so ... not that it necessarily
"answers" anything ... perhaps more just comment/observation.
