Hi LUGers,
Well the last meeting of the year was one of the
quietest.
The Dell E6420 was setup and waiting by about 5:40 PM.
6:10 PM Tom made it in. I was able to give him a copy of
GPartEd 0.33.0-1 on CD. Later I loaned him a couple of Flash
Drives with Kodachi-5.6-64 as a bootable Live distribution on one
and on the other Qubes-R4.0.1-rc1-x86_64 which is install only.
He returned two recent issues of Linux Pro magazine.
Kodachi is a distribution specialized for privacy and anonymous
activity on the net. It is from the Middle East. A bit too much eye
candy for my taste but if you want privacy and anonymity then this
may be your choice. The URL is worth looking at if you want to play
with Kodachi.

A Warning! This bootable Flash Drive was made on my Dell E6520 but
that machine could not boot, giving an error, "Failed to set MuklistRT".
But being somewhat optimistic I took it to the Dell E6540 and it booted
right up.
Since I had the free time I installed Deepin 5.8 on my Dell
E6440. I already had an install of PCLinuxOS64 there and I
still had it when I finished the install. Because my free time was
limited I did a simple install which resulted in a root partition of
240 GB and that is it. That is not satisfactory from my POV and
I will be re-installing Deepin later on.
"So why Deepin?" you might well ask. Well recently a columnist
wrote a very good article in Forbes Magazine praising Deepin as
the most beautiful Linux distribution.

A friend of mine caught wind of this and wanted my opinion.
I hadn't seen Deepin since 15.5 and thought I wanted to try it out
again. Sadly there is no Live version of Deepin as far as i know.
I didn't like it much but the initial presentation was quite nice.
It had a lovely mountain landscape but the Deepin Desktop
Environment still makes me think of Unity, Gnome 3+ and
Cinnamon and similar DEs. I did manage to download and install
Firefox. I was able to get the Chrome information collection
web browser off the Cairo tool panel but could not add Firefox
to it. It does have GPartEd loaded which is how I discovered the
root partition size. Synaptic is available as well so when I have
reinstalled the Deepin I will try to download it.
So the simple install took about 40 minutes. Choices on the
simple install were Time Zone and Language either "en" or
"zh" which I think is short for Chinese.
The first meeting of 2019 will be on Sunday January 6 from
11 am to 1 pm at the Cafe Encnante. The announcement will be
on the list by New Year's Day if not New Years Eve.
I hope all will have had a happy holiday season and a Happy
New Year in 2019.
