Seriously, though, if I were running a MS-Windows system in 2018, it
would -not- have a malware scanner program installed.
I would fix a lot of bad and dangerous defaults, starting with the
infamous one where Windows Explorer (or whatever they're calling the
file manager, these days) suppresses display of three-letter filename
extensions even though it relies on them for file-typing. I would
collect and use a range of diagnostic and repair software. I might very
well run an HIDS program. _And_ I would always make sure I had
verified-usable and timely backups of all my non-software data files.
_And_ off-system master copies of all software including the operating
system.
And, if system security (Administrator-level) were ever compromised, I
would not use antimalware software to 'repair' the system, because
that's reckless: You should no longer rely on the software or
system-configuration of a system that's been security-breached, period.
I would wipe the system and reinstall from master copies of all
software, then restore data files from backup.
Because that's what you do on _any_ OS, if you're taking it seriously.
Unfortunately, the MS-Windows way of thinking is to not bother, and I
notice that hardly any MS-Windows user has _even_ had general-purpose
installation media for his/her operating system, those having been no
longer been routinely provided since the late 1980s. Too bad for them,
because this leads to ongoing problems for them, and never having real
security.
