It's subsequently been pointed out to me that the GitLab codebase is a
Ruby on Rails Webapp, which means it will have severe scalability limits
and require a huge amount of RAM just to get off the ground.  (I was
mislead by the Wikipedia page mentioning only that the codebase is in
Ruby with a small amount of Go, but Rails is nowhere mentioned.)

There may be and probably are other GitHub workalikes that lack this
drawback.  (This is not an area I'm particularly familiar with.)
