(This is off the top of my head, and I'm not taking the time to follow
links, so I my miss some points.)
Seem to me, Hauke's LPD idea differs fundmentlly from _typical_
implementations of SFD -- in being about Linux. Although the Software
Freedom Day people always made sure they included some talk about Linux,
in practice, the events were overwhelmingly about distributing and
introducing a set of Win32-binary desktop applications that were/are
developed under open source licensing. In fact, the folks running the
flagship site specialised in a CD or DVD they published containing such
apps. A slightly cynical take on the event is that they ran SFD (at
least in part) to promote their disc of Windows software. Which of
course many would see as a meritorious thing -- but my point is that SFD
most often ended up being Windows-centric. (Some local implementations
may have differed.)
The resemblance lies IMO solely in the two events being an event idea
proposed on a free-of-charge-franchise basis to Linux user groups. I've
been seeing Hauke diligently promoting the idea and engaging with LUG
leaders on LUG mailing lists everywhere, including even totally dormant
LUGs like PenLUG. ;->
