San Francisco Linux Users Group meeting of November 21, 2016
Gee only 2 meetings left this year.
How time flies!
I got to the Cafe Enchante about 5:35 PM,
I was about half setup with the Dell E6520 when
Maestro walked in.
Maestro is (or was) having a problem with Manjaro
making it impossible to get to the Linux Mint he
had previously installed. Mint is still there
but Manjaro has assumed control of the machine
and nothing but the SuperGrubDisk2 could manage
to boot it up. But some of the tools that I
have found useful seem to be missing from Manjaro
and those on Mint seem to have no effect on the
system or on Grub2's menu list.
About 6:10 Aaron showed up with some problems
as he is ambitious about installing Slackware
and a few other distributions on his net-book
sized laptop. He wants to experience the bleeding
edge of software. That can lead to problems, eh?
About 6:20 PM Ben showed up and his problem
related to a Broadcom WiFi card. He now knows
how he might be able to fix it and I hope he
does so without problems.
Joseph P. showed up about 6:35 PM to enjoy the
discussion and look at the latest copy of the
Linux Pro magazine.
So on the Dell I had updated the PC-LOS kernel
to 4.8.9 earlier in the day. That seems to work
fine but I got more updates at the meeting.
Then I tried to get Q4OS online but I could not
find a place to enter a WAP pre-shared key.
Apparently nothing more than WEP is supported.
I tried booting up from ExeGnu Linux which
went well but when I tried to get it online
I found the Network Manager under Trinity Desktop
Environment was not so useful and so I failed
twice with the attempt to get online with
TDE supporting distributions.
So I went to my PC-LOS 2016.07 with the
KDE's Plasma 5.x preview and did my kernel updates
to 4.8.9.
I had started my exploration of Trinity
Desktop Environment because of the problems I
have with Plasma 5 but it proved superior to
the Trinity because it went right on line as
soon as booted up. Both the TDE systems failed
to be configurable enough to get them online
at the Cafe Enchante. The ExeGnuLinux was
from last spring and the 4QOS was from this
month,
So a couple of members took home disks and one
took home a magazine.
Aaron wants a copy of Knoppix 7.7.1 and I will have
one for him at the next meeting on Sunday, December 4,
2016.
Fedora 25 has come out today. I am torrenting it
right now and will have a copy of at least the Workstation
version at the meeting and if possible installed
on the Dell by the next meeting. A new version of Clonezilla
is also out today and I expect to have that at the next
meeting so if anyone wants copies of either let me
know.
A regular meeting notice should be posted on
November 29th, i,e, next Monday.
Now if anyone from the meeting is willing to offer
corrections or emendations feel free to enlighten the
readers and myself.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
