This never occurred to me- it wasn't mentioned by
W. Curtis Preston: Backup & Recovery - O'Reilly
but your suggestion got me studying man rsync and I think:
             --link-dest=DIR         hardlink to files in DIR when 
unchanged
is the option I want.
