[sf-lug] ... thought CD/DVD burned discs were coasters ...

I've had optical drive failures before, where the drive still burned discs
okay, but couldn't successfully read the discs it burned, though they read
fine in other drives.  "Of course" that was only before that drive
eventually totally failed and couldn't burn anything either.  Fortunately
I had it still under warranty and got it replace for free*
*for certain definitions of free ... I did pay a bit extra to get
the "extended" warranty ... but only did that near the end of the
standard warranty (had several items I wanted to be fixed under
warranty - but wanted to have that done at my convenience, rather
than at the end of the expiration of the standard warranty).  Most of the
time "extended warranties" aren't worth it ... but there are some exceptions.
And generally one can buy extended warranty at same price so long as existing
warranty has not expired.
