The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting:

  Monday
  February 16, 2015
  7:00pm - 9:00pm

Presentation:
Using Raptor and Pascal to teach programming
  presented by Brian Lavender

RAPTOR is a flowchart-based programming environment, designed
specifically to help students visualize their algorithms and avoid
syntactic baggage. RAPTOR programs are created visually and executed
visually by tracing the execution through the flowchart. Required syntax
is kept to a minimum. Students prefer using flowcharts to express their
algorithms, and are more successful creating algorithms using RAPTOR
than using a traditional language or writing flowcharts without RAPTOR.

30 years ago or so Pascal was the choice language for teaching intro
programming. Yet, it still illustrates clearly and concisely.
The Free Pascal Compiler works well a simple compiler for teaching.

About the speaker:
Brian is teaching his first introductory computer science course at
American River College. The text focuses on the use of pseudocode
and flowcharts. Beyond scrambling to figure online course systems,
anguishing over writing quizzes, sweating over grading, Brian has
searched to find better tools that students can put their hands on.

This meeting will be held at:

  Explorit Nature Center
  3141 5th Street
  Davis, CA 95616
