Well, catdoc would be the direct and obvious answer for viewing at the
console.

AbiWord or Ted (http://www.nllgg.nl/Ted) for (graphical) editing.  Or
GEDit (GNOME), Mousepad, PatheticWriter (part of the SIAG office suite).
BlueWriter (Java).  Jovial Notepad

Rtf Editor aka RtfEd (proprietary, gratis) also works:

As an aside, I've always felt that AbiWord has been unjustly ignored by
most commentators.
