[sf-lug] Recent failure of mother board in my Compaq Notebook and fresh purchase

So last Saturday the 10 rd of May about 9 AM I was moving a message
between folders on Thunderbird when the
computer crashed,

I had other stuff to do so when I came back I swapped out the drive
and found that no matter what drive I had inside the
machine it could not be seen by the computer.
So I carried over to a shop on Polk Street and left it there until
yesterday when they concurred in my estimate of the
problem and believed it would be too expensive(more than 3/4 the price
new) to fix, Today I found a HP Pavilion notebook or
LPTP,15-N225NR with an AMD A-10, 8 GIB of ram and 750 GiB hard disk
running Windows 8.1 It is about a pound lighter and
the battery lasts about 2.25 as long as the Compaq notebook batter and
it is incredibly light(the battery).
Lest you think I am infatuated with the new box note that the
keyboard uses incredibly small print on the function keys
very irritating.
     The disk is formatted as GPT and I ran a shrink volume on the C;
partition taking it from about 650 GiB to less than 60 GiB.
Being of generous mind I gave the Windows an additional 100 GiB
partition which left me with over 500 GiG to install if
I can figure out exactly how to do that.

I am downloading a KDE version of Fedora x86_64 and hope it will be
more automatic. I have managed to get the
PCLOS to run from a live DVD but it seems unconscious of the new GPT
system. So I tried Knoppix to see if it could
see the GPT and it can throuth GParted. If I cannot install Fedora to
the box I will move the internal hard drive out
and put in my abused 500 GiB drive which is the most important it of
this system. Then I can use the MBR to re-install
which ever system, but Iwould rather use the GTP on the present drive.

Well I tried Mageia, Fedora, and Knoppix multiple times without
being able to do a complete install.
Late this afternoon I used Kubuntu 14.04 LTS and it worked. Even
with minor manipulation able to
boot cleanly with MS's pop art creation still available.

Just have to move some pref and data to the new drive tomorrow I think.

     Good night.
     bliss
