[sf-lug] resolver problem in Fedora

I am experiencing a most perplexing and seemingly inconsistent problem with url to IP address resolution that might interest (some) list member(s).
I "administer" two home networks.
One is in DockTown in Redwood City where DNS services are provided by unbound running on a SheevaPlug and here everything works as you'd expect it should. (I should acknowledge here that I was able to accomplish this only because of advice provide on this list by Rick Moen.)
The other is in Bolinas where a consumer grade router (Netopia) is providing the service. (I hope in the not too distant future to get a plug going here as well.)
Users include (amongst others) an Ubuntu and two Fedora laptops. All is well in Redwood City. In Bolinas however, only the Ubuntu machine works properly. Both Fedora laptops are unable to resolve.
But it's even more mysterious because these same fedora machines CAN ping and they can dig while in Bolinas, but neither ssh nor firefox can resolve.
How can this be????
As a ps, I'll add the code snippets to show what I mean about dig working but ssh not. (the Netopia router is at IP address 10.0.0.2; alex at zar is an Ubuntu laptop, mike at ee is a fedora laptop, another fedora laptop behaves the same way; a MacBookPro laptop and a M$Windows laptop have no problems)
I have to assume this is somehow a bug in the Fedora distro but I can't understand how ping and dig can resolve, without other programs being able to do so.
