VLC has the most codecs built-in, but mplayer is better suited for easy control.

mplayer is the workhorse, but doesn't handle DVD menus and navigation.

Xine I resort to on some DVDs since it's a little easier to specify
the DVD (or .VOB files) as an input, or because some few file formats
don't decode on the others.  Sometimes handles menus a little better.
