...and those big players (1) have moved most of their operations (and
thus jobs) out of the Valley, and (2) go through long periods of hiring
freezes and cutbacks -- which is what's been the case for the last
couple of years.  In particular, working directly in computer hardware
or software means dealing with recurring business cycles

notoriously boom-and-bust; I can say that from long personal experience.
