I definitely hear you on the HR block for lack of degree.  Like you, I'm
self-taught (though you seem to have gone well beyond my autodidacticism in
CS).  I burned out late in college, and have experience a similar bias in
hiring.  And in this market companies are being ridiculously choosy,
expecting degrees even for mind-numbing work like reception, and expecting
advanced degrees for development, and even ops jobs.
