Thanks for the suggestions.  I may see what Mike at Noisebridge can
help me do with his magic soldering iron.  I did try an external
monitor with identical results - black screen a few minutes after
booting.

Most of the T42s I see on ebay have 512 MB like my old one but I am
glad 2G is possible.

I think most people today would be happier with a Terra A20 from
http://www.zareason.com - but it seems it's not listed by default any
more and the page shows out of stock.  Luckily I had the URL in my
browser cache!
