After probing around, it appears that xrandr and it various GUI applets will
allow you only to chose from previously available settings.  My problem is
providing myself with more settings from which to choose.

I have been told on an IRC channel that I could try downloading the radeonhd
driver, which I have, but the guy didn't know how to "turn on" the driver
once I had downloaded it.

So it seems that is what I need to do now.   Any suggestions anyone?
