I don't personally have any experience with the various nullmailers; I
just accumulate Web information on such things.
I do notice that most (all?) of them don't seem to do SMTP-TLS (SSL) on
the outbound connections, but I suppose there are ways to SSL-wrap the
thing (he says, vaguely hand-waving).
If it starts getting frustrating, consider a simple Exim4 setup. It's
a full-blown MTA, but rather more on the friendly side than is
Sendmail.[1]
(We say "Exim4" to distinguish the current 4.0 series, which was a major
rewrite, from the now-defunct 3.x series of yesteryear.)
