[sf-lug] ubuntu server 8.04 doesn't seem to see IDE drives

i should note that i put a knoppix 3.4 CD in the
machine's DVD/CD-ROM drive and got the expected
knoppix GUI. i invoked a terminal window and used
shell command such as fdisk and mke2fs and mount and
df and ls and so forth just fine.
so how come the ubuntu server 8.04 CD doesn't
also work just fine?
