Oh, absolutely.  The equivalent iPhone [/iPod Touch] operation is called
"jailbreaking" it.

Problem is, you're still stuck using the signed kernel with all of its
bugs and deficiencies forever (or any replacements that T-Mobile permits
you to use), and your "rooting" of the device is subject to eradication
if you apply official upgrades.
