first, many thanks, asheesh.
second, how do you learn all that helpful stuff?

third, attached is a copy of the
/etc/apt/sources.list
file that came with my installation of
ubuntu 8.04

* note i've added
# linux.csua.berkeley.edu
* to the very bottom of the file
* here's what happened before i put the comment delimiter
* at the head of that line
* Synaptic Package Manager reports An error occured:
E: Type 'linux.csua.berkeley.edu' is not known on line 61 in source
list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
* what is a "repository dialog" and how to go to it?

* thanks, v. helpful; more helpful than their help string.

* how to discover the root cause in this case? <--------
* by jumping hoops" i meant using apt-get at the command
* line to get the four individual components mentioned
* in the error message complaint list. i managed to get
* only one of the four (see next section for the three
* i didn't get).

> What is "adobe-flashplugin"?

* well, this is embarrassing as well as frustrating.
* i'm trying to help some impoverished musician
* update her web site; her resources want $100 per hour.
* her web site works fine when accessed with some operating
* system with its native browser, but it doesn't respond
* when i try firefox 2.0.0.18 on ubuntu 8.04. the site
* returned a complaint that i should upgrade flash.
* hoping to be a good boy, i installed gnash instead
* but got the same results: session connection then freezing.
* in dispair, i tried to uninstall gnash, but cannot
* succeed. the Synaptic Package Manager shows gnash and
* gnash-common with a black box in the S column and
* gnash-cygnal and gnash-tools with empty boxes in the
* S column. i've tried getting rid of gnash in several
* ways, at one point i'd managed to get gnash-cygnal and
* gnash-tools gone, but here they are back.
* also in (greater) dispair i tried to install "flash"
* from the adobe website: this is debian flash for ubuntu
* 8.04, according to the adobe flash pulldown list. the
* install begins but then chokes with the following complaints
* (used to be four complaints, but i got libcurl3).
 adobe-flashplugin depends on libcairo2 (>= 1.6.0); however:
  Version of libcairo2 on system is 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.4. <---- 1
 adobe-flashplugin depends on libnss3-1d; however:
  Package libnss3-1d is not installed. <----- 2
 adobe-flashplugin depends on libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.20.1); however:
  Version of libpango1.0-0 on system is 1.18.3-0ubuntu1. <---- 3
dpkg: error processing adobe-flashplugin (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

> try instaling flashplugin-nonfree -

* i tried
# apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
* and got
...<bunch of messages to STDOUT>...
07:46:50 (159.72 KB/s) - `./install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz' saved
[3044538/3044538]

Download done.
Flash Plugin installed.

* i shut down firefox and restarted it then tried to load
http://www.castlesinspain.com
* and got the same results: initial loading then freezing.
* using the firefox menu Tools > Add-ons shows only
Twitbin 1.5
ubufox 0.4~beta1
* using the Add-ons dialog to get extensions shows
* nothing that might relate to flashiness.
* i'll restart the box and see if something improves.

more thanks,
jim
