A friend sent me an email which might be of interest to the group:

"I happened to Ubuntu 8.04 on Satellite Pro 6100 laptop  for someone
(machine dates from about 2000) and was pleasantly surprised to find
that it worked perfectly out of the box!  
"I discovered that the Toshiba website lists results for installing
Ubuntu 8.05  for recent laptop models.   Might be some good info for the
SF LUG. "
